The quicksand of anti-patriotism, is it pulling on Obama?

The anti-patriotic comments are starting to swirl around Obama, it is becoming a pattern, and don't think Rove and company are not taking notice of how weak a candidate Obama would thus be in the general.

They started with the lapel pin (and indeed this resonated in interviews in the NYT this week with Pennsylvania voters) but now they are getting assists from Obama's own team. This exposes Obama's rookie handling of big sensitive situation - the Iraq war.

One does not have to be a supporter of John McCain's politics to appreciate why this is a crass thing to say, a gigantic gaffe, and why Obama will own this kind of talk from his supporters - especially when thousands of young American men and women are walking in McCain's shoes right now in Iraq.

The Democrat who has always handled the military service issue impeccably is Al Franken - never attacking the warrior, only attacking the war. I think Obama does not know what he is getting into, and it is gaffes like this that underscore for me why Hillary is better able to handle the general election than Obama is. Obama comes off as too arrogant about the military, this will not fly.

Roll this into the comments from Michelle Obama about being ashamed of her country (and BTW - she has completely disappeared from the press??) and the mother of all military insulters Rev. Wright and we do not have a winning Democrat in Obama.

Good thing that 12 million people still have to vote.

Why exactly will Obama "own" this kind of talk from his supporters anymore than any of the other candidates "own" the words from their surrogates...?

help the Republicans in November. Ferraro's race gaffe won't translate into a Rove narrative, nor will Mark Penn's thoughtless move on NAFTA - in both of those cases we are looking at Dem-on-Dem squabbling - but when it comes to the war - LOOK OUT. That's something the Republicans can seriously work with to destroy a candidate.

I'd be the happiest man alive if I never had to hear the word "vetted" again. What the hell does that even mean? The Republicans will throw slime at whoever we run, if they can't dig up anything they'll just invent it. If 2004 has taught us anything, it's that we need a powerful, rapid response team ready for anything.

What you didn't realize that decorated marines who hate the Military and America are allowed to assist on an operation involving the CiC (LBJ in this case, not sure what the operation was for but Wright was the assisting nurse), why after Reagan was shot they flew him to Havana so castro could save his life personally.

I am just wondering what you think "the Wright re-upped during Vietnam" means to Reagan democrats? I can tell you zero. Kerry was a war hero and got smeared to death. These voters just don't care about that. What the care about is BO adviser for 20 years making not one, not two, not three but multiple anti-American, anti-white, and anti-Israel comments. Not one slip but multiple statements. If you all want to spend a lot of time talking about context good luck. That will go over as well as the definition of is is.

My mom, a 70 year old life long dem and she called me and asked why BO doesn't put his hand on the chest during the pledge??? She asked why he goes to a racist church?? And she is not very fond of HRC for other reasons. Mind you she has to my knowledge never voted gop in the GE. i almost fell off the floor. If you think these "he served lines will change working class voters minds you are kidding your selves.

BO already has a problem here and long explanations will not fix this. If Wright is not under the bus it will hurt BO in the GE.

It hurts mainly when people on our side repeat rather than debunk the smears.

He puts his had over his heart during the pledge, not during the anthem, as is proper.

The Wright and the "typical" issues would lose much power if those on our side didn't pile on with out-of-context misinterpretations

Hillary could have killed those discussions. Her failure to do so has cost much admiration on my part.

After 8 years of Bush labeling any whiff of disagreement as Anti-Patriotic, Americans have become skeptical of the charge. If Rove wants to force the issue, he would be setting Obama up for another brilliant speech that would render the patriotism card useless to anyone but the most hopeless of right-wing jingoists.

he's adept enough to talk his way out of most things. i'm worried about his supporters. they booed sheila jackson lee in houston when she said she was proud to be an american. they shouted down a speaker in oregon who suggested saying the pledge of allegiance. they're not doing themselves or their candidate any favors.
