Re: Please no! (2.00 / 1)

She's been a good senator for my state for eight years now. Especially if things don't turn for the better for Ted Kennedy, we need all the strong, aggressive Democrats in the Senate we can get.

If she could bring half the fight to Senate battles that she's brought to this race, she'd be twice the Majority Leader that Spineless Harry has been. I'd love to see her in the Majority Leader's chair.

Re: Please no! (2.00 / 1)

Clinton's eminently qualified to handle just about any position in government. I don't think her qualifications have ever been an issue in this election.

Personally, I don't see why she'd want a Cabinet position over possibly being Majority Leader.

You do realize Senator Obama (none / 0)

So it doesn't bother me to lose three states by 30%.

I don't ignore the past, because the past decides the nomination.

But nice try.

Do you realize (none / 0)

that most of those were caucus states? There is a HUGE difference between a real primary vote and a caucus.

Yes... I know.. the caucuses still count.

But for comparison of caucuses to primaries, see the difference in TX where both counted (how stupid) and WA where the caucus counted and the primary did not. Both of the "primaries" in these states had HUGE turnouts. Both of the caucuses had huge turnouts also... for a caucus.. but still MUCH lower than the primary votes.

Declaration of victory

A nice aside for Senator Kennedy and a unifying moment that shows we'll be alright when all's said and done.

More talk of speech and counting the votes which was a lead-in into discussing the need to count votes in Florida and Michigan.

Chants of Yes We Will, parodying Yes We Can and more discussion of a need of a strong candidate that can win the white house because the stakes have never been so high.

Mentions of HillaryClinton.com and the need to donate - she's with you as long as you're with her being the message.

Pretty much a nice speech. Kennedy moments will be the unifying part of tonight's contests.

Re: KY: Hillary Clinton Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

Meh. It's a little annoying, but hardly outrageous.
As Lawrence O'Donnell said yesterday, she needs a justification to stay in the race. She's still predicating her continued campaign on the delegates and votes Michigan and Florida would provide if counted as-is.

She may realize she's unlikely to win, but she's still got to have a rationale for staying in. I don't have a problem with her still pushing the "count the votes!" battlecry. The only time I get ticked is when she bashes Obama as an elitist or unelectable, and that's clearly subsided.

Re: KY: Hillary Clinton Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

The reason that Obama may be competitive in some southern states is that some expect a large boost among AAs (coupled with a big registration drive). However, polling uses turnout models that rely upon prior turnout. Poblano has performed some interesting statistical projections that show how significant increased turnout would be. NC is probably out of reach, but Virginia is certainly possible b/c northern Virginia should provide Obama a strong white base of support in addition to record turnout among AAs.

Re: KY: Hillary Clinton Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

Virginia isn't all Dixie. And, McCain's turnout among evangelicals could be quite low, especially if he keeps running to the middle and Bob Barr makes a strong appeal to those voters.

Obama is going to campaign hard in Virginia, which will introduce him to certain skeptical voters who might otherwise just equate Obama and Rev. Wright. Obama presently is only trailing by 3 is the most recent VA poll by Rasmussen, so he's within striking distance if he can boost AA turnout and move a few of those skeptical voters in the western part of the state.

they underestimated Obama's final number and overestimated Clinton's number.

Re: KY: Hillary Clinton Victory Speech Thread (2.00 / 1)

When you consider the fact that more Obama supporters have said they would vote for Hillary than Hillary supporters saying they'd vote for Obama, this poll isn't surprising.

Why? Because Obama supporters know he's the nominee and have relatively little issue entertaining the vote for Clinton.

Clinton supporters are still coming to grips with losing the nomination and still have the feelings of bitterness and dislike that she's been beaten, and are less willing to support Obama at this time.

If the tables were turned and Obama were behind I don't doubt it'd be the same way.

That's not the only reason (none / 0)

Clinton's coalition includes a higher percentage of moderate and conservative Democrats and a higher percentage of older Democrats.  These people are more similar to Democrats who have defected in the past than most of Obama's coalition.  Not every Democrat can win them and more than a few Republicans can.  On the other hand, African Americans, college kids, and latte liberals are very poor bets to vote Republican.

She has a single payer option within her plan.

Choice 1.) Keep what you have

Choice 2.) Buy into the same plan that members of congress have

Choice 3.) Buy into a public plan based on Medicare (i.e. single payer). Although not the best option, this is similar to Germany's universal healthcare system. It would revolutionize the healthcare system...like creating public universities side by side with the private ones.

Re: KY: Hillary Clinton Victory Speech Thread (2.00 / 1)

It warms my heart to see Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea on stage with so many people cheering them on.  They deserve every cheer and thanks they get from those supporters and from us.  It amazes me win after win, how her supporters continue to give her their votes in huge huge numbers despite the idea that the whole thing is all decided.  They are standing with her there in solidarity, smiling ear to ear, and you can tell how happy they are for her in their faces.

They think that she can win the nomination, just like folks here. I bet that most of them have no clue that Obama gets a majority of the pledged delegates tonight. I say that because I mentioned it to about 4 people in the last 2 days and they didn't know - and these are folks who follow the news.

Rather they think that she should win the nomination.  Try as you might, you can't paint Kentuckians into stupid cud chewing uninformed people like was tried with West Virgianians and others in that part of the country.  They believe in her  because they do, and they are going to say it despite the nodding heads in the media and elsewhere. If Obama implodes, over half the party will gladly welcome her as the nominee with open arms.

Rev. wright is toxic for Obama in the general election. especially in these parts.

Obama could have gone into Kentucky and campaigned for a whole week and there won't be any difference in his numbers.

Its something that is talked about almost everyday .

Values are important and if you don't seem to share it , a lot would vote against you even if it goes against their economic interest.

Incorrect.

As you can see, Green is Senator Clinton, Purple is Senator Obama.

It wouldn't matter if Senator Obama could walk on water and run a 4-40. He isn't going to win Kentucky; she isn't going to win Oregon, Montana or South Dakota.

Re: KY: Hillary Clinton Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

"Rev. wright is toxic for Obama in the general election."

Is the point I'm calling incorrect. Senator Obama lost states in this region before it even broke. He was going to lose them, period.

He could've closed the gap by pivoting to the center and pandering in certain areas but he didn't.

But never a win.

But the conclusion is the same, yes - that he isn't going to win these states in the general, just like Senator Clinton won't win certain demographics Senator Obama excels at.

Re: KY: Hillary Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

"...until we have a nominee...whoever she may be!"

hahaha, loved that line!  Whoo hooo, she's putting in another convincing win!  Surely the superdelegates will have to be considering yet another resounding win by the woman who so many have already counted out!  74% in and she's still got more than a 2 to 1 lead (65% to 31%), and a +172,000 lead in the votes themselves!

Now tell me if I'm wrong, no Democrat has won the Presidency without winning the Ohio primary in at least 40 years or so either right?  So it's not only the key swing states she's getting, but those states that have gottenr right in the past.  Anyway, I'm rambling, but here's hoping we get to a +35% spread!

Re: KY: Hillary Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

Obviously they do realize he's won the most pledged delegates to date, but also that he's not yet won enough to actually win.  And regardless of whether FL and MI delegates get seated or not, votes were placed--and we do all know the results of those actual placed votes.  So the popular votes that were placed and that "can actually be counted" are in her favor.  Does that include caucuses?  No it doesn't--but considering that some of those states have not even counted or reported actual votes, it's a little hard to count them...actually, it's impossible.  And please note:  I'm NOT saying they shouldn't count, only that it's hard to try to include them in the one vote, one person calculation.

But both Hillary and yes even Barack need the superdelegates to get them to the winning number.  So the caucuses are certainly represented in the delegate counts that many of the Supers are undoubtedly looking at to make their decisions.  But, when the purported "deciding metric" is NOT enough in and of itself to actually get the win, which it is not in this case, it would only seem logical that all metrics and considerations are taken into account.  But I'm not a superdelegate, so although I would be considering ALL things--each superdelegate will be (or at least should be) making their own decision about what's important to them.

Re: KY: Hillary Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

"But both Hillary and yes even Barack need the superdelegates to get them to the winning number"

This is a logical fallacy/semantic cheat known as "equivocation."

Clinton needs a large percentage of the superdelegates to change their minds and vote for her.

Obama doesn't even need to slip the superdelegates. He can lose them and still win.

Re: KY: Hillary Victory Speech Thread (none / 0)

Actually what you quoted is simply a fact.  I didn't say one needed more or less than the other--only that both needed the superdelegates, and that is the plain and simple truth.

For an example of equivocation, I'd say to just listen to what Barack Obama just declared in his "victory speech" in Iowa.  Anybody from the DNC who's spoken out regarding Florida and Michigan has clearly stated that they WILL BE seated in some way--so for him to claim that he's surpassed the pledged delegates majority is clearly and deliberately misleading since there is no doubt the "majority" figure he's citing will be changed from the number he's claiming to be the majority.
