The KOS-ification of MyDD

In an environment that encourages the "discourse", an environment I greatly appreciated and respected, I have born witness to namecalling and bullying the likes of whcih I haven't witnessed since my hormone-laden pre-teen years.  It seems now, on this site, if you support Hillary Clinton for President, that gives some license to call you a whole host of unflattering names.   On this site, there are voting-age adults who participate in adolescent antics.  And I say to you who do this, go back to KOS.  If you can't argue the merits of your candidate without resorting to namecalling, go back to KOS.  If you can't engage in adult political discourse, go back to KOS.  If you only want to participate in Obamania, go back to KOS.

This site, unique among others, was about the discourse.  As I understand it, this site's mission was about the discussion of the merits (or not) of various Democratic candidates and principles.  That has ceased.  Too many on this site seek to shout down discourse.  Too many on this site seek to namecall and bully any thinking that differs from theirs.  To you I say, you waste my time!  To the administrators, I say, I'm sick and tired of providing documentation of offenders.  Monitor your site!

In any event, Hillary's supporters will continue the fight to see her win the nomination and the GE (whether on this site or through other means).  To those who don't support Hillary's efforts to win the nomination and the GE, I say shame on you.  You are disloyal.  You are a fair-weather friend.  Your agenda is fickle.  You tarnish and smear the most successful Democratic Presidential legacy in over a generation.  You tarnish and smear the most qualified presidential candiate the Dem party has available.  But you're a Democrat; and Hillary's supporters are trolls, or worse.  You waste my time.

P.S.  SG; get a life!

Actually, I post there openly (under another handle) as a liberal Democrat.  I've managed not to get banned by engaging them in fair and reasonable discourse as best I can.

Most of them don't make it easy, but there are good people there.

I post there infrequently, but I do like to engage with people I disagree with.  I hate living in an echo chamber, and besides, there are interesting things you can learn from your opponents.

That said, there are more than a few people who are obviously, and incredibly, full of shit at RedState, and they scare the hell out of me.

FWIW (2.00 / 5)

It's irresponsible to level this charge without noting that there's quite a lot of the same treatment from Clinton supporters, which has seemingly been sanctioned by the administration here.  Oddly enough, you have provided some examples of such attacks in your diary itself!

I'm not defending the kind of attacks you describe, just pointing out that to it's not just from BHO supporters.

Re: FWIW (2.00 / 4)

Disagreement is the basis of attacks, and your comments at the end of the diary at the very least verge on attack.

Calling all people who do not support your candidate disloyal and accusing all of them of smearing is certainly an irrational attack if I've ever seen one.  If that's how you disagree, I'd wonder what you consider hostility.  You don't quote any attacks in your piece, and if you did, there are plenty from the other side to match.

There's another option (2.00 / 7)

"To those who don't support Hillary's Barack's efforts to win the nomination and the GE, I say shame on you.  You are disloyal.  You are a fair-weather friend.  Your agenda is fickle.  You tarnish and smear the most successful Democratic Presidential legacy candidate in over a generation.  You tarnish and smear the most qualified presidential candiate the Dem party has available."

It goes both ways.  However, I, and most of the people on this site, don't agree with either your statement or the one I've written above.  Hows about this one:

"To those that don't support whomever the Democratic nominee is, I say shame on you.  You are disloyal.  You are a fair-weather friend.  Your agenda is fickle.  You tarnish and smear what is likely going to be the best year in a LONG time to be a Democrat.  You tarnish and smear all that two of the most qualified candidates the Dem party has submitted in 16 years have worked for."

Yeah (2.00 / 1)

Thanks for engaging, I think it shows that the ones who want to believe the worst are wrong.

A tough primary fight can polarize a supporters of the candidate that is perceived (according to the traditional media Obama has this all but locked up).  This could be seen in 2004 where a lot of the Deaniacs swore they'd never vote for Kerry but a large majority of them came home.  Also in 2000 where over 50% of Bradley supporters said they'd vote for Bush in the spring of 2000 (a lot of them came home, but some probably voted for Nader).  Likewise in 2000 over 50% of McCain's supporters said they'd vote for Gore.  The cross-over vote that year was fairly low (much lower than those numbers suggest).

I am guessing the number of defectors will be higher in 2008 for Obama as there are some women who voted based on the fact that Clinton is a women.  Some of these people might be angry at Obama and thus not vote for him, but if history is a guide a lot of these people will come back.

I will grant that my case is less likely to be true in states like KY and WV (where Clinton shows surprising strength) where the defection rate is normally extremely high.  Clinton connected to those folks in a way that I doubt Obama can.

However this year is looking tremendously bright for democrats right now (based on polling data about right track/wrong track info, the state of the economy, and the war).  It is true that neither nominee is a slam dunk as there is a lot that can happen between now and Nov., but this year has such potential that almost any democrat could win.

Re: The KOS-ification of MyDD (2.00 / 1)

I find this diary lacking the balance necessary for credibility.  It's completely possible for things to be one sided.  But it requires minimal attention to see that the ugliness on this site is spread quite evenly.

Re: The KOS-ification of MyDD (2.00 / 2)

Sorry, but there's very little honest discourse around here, right now.  Issue diaries (such as the one linfar just posted which is worth a look: http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/29/1752 50/169) are largely ignored in favor of those that are 100% dishonest spin in favor of one candidate or another (or, just as often, against one candidate or another).

Supporters of no single candidate are to blame, despite your attempt to put it all on Obama supporters.

No way. No how. No McCain.

Re: The KOS-ification of MyDD (2.00 / 3)

I defend MyDD as a place where Democrats of all stripes can converse, agree, disagree and find common ground.  I applaud everyone's efforts to support Democrats and Democratic policies, even if the Democrats they support are not necessarily those that I support because each Democrat elected makes us and our agenda stronger, each conversation makes our understanding of the issues stronger.

I like MyDD because of the reasonable exchange of ideas with thoughtful posters.  Unfortunately, you are not one of them.

RE: This Diary.... WOW (1.33 / 3)

So Clinton supporters primarily engage in civil discourse and Obama supporters act like hormone-laden pre-teens? I find those remarks elitist and out of touch.

Thank You (2.00 / 1)

I wonder how often I get caught up in Republicans pretending to be Clinton supporters. Perhaps I should reserve judgment until I'm sure who I'm dealing with.

This site is the best.

Except for a person or two, everybody seems honest.  I see no name calling here.

KOSification - ain't it great?!?! (2.00 / 5)

Yep!

A site where millions of people come, where leading Democrats like John Kerry post their thoughts and listen to the feedback of voters, where articles are written that are picked up by and change the MSM, where future Demoratic presidential candidates share their thoughts and candidates of all stipes and sizes rally their base.  A site that attracts more than just Democrats, and where open discourse happens on a large scale.

A widely-known forum that is setting the standard for free exchange of information and ideas.

I'm sure Jerome will be pleased that you think it is all working out so well.

by kossification of MyDD do you mean (none / 0)

the presence of more substantive diaries lately?

Well, I agree, this place is getting a lot more interesting.

I think Hillaryis44 is a pretty boring site, and there was a time when the only diaries on this site were pretty much the kind of stuff you'd see there.

To those who don't support Hillary's efforts to win the nomination and the GE, I say shame on you.  You are disloyal.

I don't support Clinton one bit, but I'll hold my nose and vote for her if she turns out to be the nominee.

Am I disloyal? Or are you too busy conflating Clinton with Democratic Party to think straight?

Does this diary (none / 0)

uplift the discourse at MyDD at all? What happened to standards, admins?

Is it irony that while you criticize those that:

"I have born witness to namecalling and bullying the likes of whcih I haven't witnessed since my hormone-laden pre-teen years.  It seems now, on this site, if you support Hillary Clinton for President, that gives some license to call you a whole host of unflattering names."

while at the same time saying:

"To those who don't support Hillary's efforts to win the nomination and the GE, I say shame on you.  You are disloyal.  You are a fair-weather friend.  Your agenda is fickle.  You tarnish and smear the most successful Democratic Presidential legacy in over a generation.  You tarnish and smear the most qualified presidential candiate the Dem party has available."

or are you just being completely intellectually bankrupt?
